Roof Repairs in Peterborough

A ridge tile on the drive, a brown patch spreading across the landing ceiling, or a drip that only starts when the rain comes sideways. Tell us what your roof is doing and we will pass it to a local roofing firm that handles repairs across Peterborough and the surrounding towns. If water is coming in now, mention it first, so it can be dealt with as urgent.

Roof Repairs in Peterborough

The Repairs Roofers See Most in Peterborough

Slipped and cracked tiles. On the township estates, concrete interlocking tiles crack at the nibs or slide when their fixings give way. On older slate roofs in the city the nails rust through, so slates slide out whole. Either way, the tile is usually the easy part; reaching it safely is what takes the time.

Ridge and verge mortar. Bedded ridges and verges lose their mortar over the years, first as grit in the gutter, then as a loose ridge tile. Re-bedding, or switching to a dry-fix system that does not rely on mortar, is one of the most frequent repairs on the estates built in the 1970s and 80s. If much of the roof is at the same stage, our estate roofs section explains when repair stops being the sensible choice.

Leaks that are hard to trace. Water can run along a batten or the underlay for some distance before it drips, so the stain inside is often a long way from the fault outside. Tracing it is the skilled part of the job; the fix itself is often small.

Valleys. Where two roof slopes meet, the valley carries a lot of water. Old lead or mortar valleys crack and clog with moss and debris, and a leak there tends to show on a bedroom ceiling at the junction.

Lead Flashing Repairs

Lead flashing seals the joint wherever a roof meets a chimney, wall, dormer or rooflight. It lasts well, but it cracks along old folds, pulls out of its mortar joint, and splits where it was fixed too tightly to move. A repair done years ago with sealant or a strip of self-adhesive tape is very often where a leak is getting in now.

The proper repair is new lead of the right thickness, cut and dressed to fit, tucked into a raked-out joint and pointed in. It costs more than a tube of sealant, and it lasts many years longer. Ask which one your quote is for.

Storm and Emergency Roof Damage

After a spell of high wind, the calls follow a pattern: ridge tiles down, a run of tiles lifted along one slope, flashing pulled away from a stack, and felt garage roofs peeled back at a seam.

If water is coming through now, say so at the start of the call and we will pass it on as urgent. The roofing firm's first job is to make the roof safe, usually a tarpaulin or a temporary patch to keep the weather out, with the permanent repair to follow once you have agreed a quote and the conditions allow. We cannot give you an attendance time, because we are not the roofer, and we would rather be clear about that than promise one. Send an enquiry outside working hours and you will get a call back on the next working day.

What you can safely do now:

  • Catch the water in buckets and move furniture and electrics away from it.
  • Take photographs of the damage from the ground and from inside, with the date.
  • Note when the leak started and what the weather was doing.
  • Keep receipts for anything you have to buy, from tarpaulins to a dehumidifier.
  • Stay off the roof. Wet tiles and wind make it dangerous for anyone without the right equipment.

Will Home Insurance Pay?

Buildings insurance usually covers sudden damage from a storm and usually excludes wear and tear that has built up over time. Which one your damage is gets decided on the evidence: whether there was a storm around the date, whether the damage looks like storm damage, and whether the weather was the main cause or simply revealed a fault that was already there. On an older roof, a ridge that had been losing its mortar for years is likely to be treated differently from tiles lifted cleanly in one gale.

Take photographs before anything is touched, contact your insurer before any permanent repair, and ask the roofer for a short written report saying what failed and why. Our guide to roof leaks and home insurance explains how insurers and the Financial Ombudsman approach these claims. Read it as general guidance; only your policy wording and your insurer can say what your cover includes.

Moss, Gutters and Leaks That Are Not the Roof

Some enquiries turn out not to need a roof repair at all. Thick moss lifts tiles and holds water against them, and clearing it is a roof cleaning job first. A blocked or broken gutter pours water down the wall and the damp inside looks just like a roof leak, so rule out the gutters before anyone goes up.

What Changes the Price

Access. Whether the job can be done from a ladder, needs a tower, or needs full scaffolding is often the biggest part of the price. It is the usual reason two quotes for the same repair are far apart.

How long it has been left. A slipped tile fixed quickly stays a small job. Left through a wet winter, the water reaches the battens and rafters and the repair becomes timber work.

Whether there is more than one fault. A roofer on a scaffold who finds three problems will quote for three. Doing them together is cheaper than paying for access more than once.

How It Works

Give us your postcode and a description of the problem. We pass your enquiry to a roofing firm covering your part of Peterborough, and they arrange to look at it and give you a quote. Repairs are carried out by that firm, not by us, and we do not inspect or approve it. It costs you nothing and commits you to nothing.

Related Services

When repairs keep coming back, roof replacement explains what a re-roof involves. A leak at the stack is usually chimney repairs, a leak from a garage or extension is flat roofing, and a damp wall under the eaves is often guttering, fascias and soffits.

Common Questions

How quickly can a roofer come out?

Urgent enquiries are passed on first, but we are not the roofer, so we cannot promise a time. The roofing firm itself will give you a time once it has your details. If you contact us outside working hours, you will hear back on the next working day.

Should I contact my insurer or a roofer first?

If you can keep water out safely from the ground, do that first, photograph everything, and then contact your insurer before any permanent repair. Most policies allow reasonable emergency work to stop further damage. Our roof leaks and home insurance guide sets out the order.

Can a slipped tile wait?

It can, but it is rarely a good idea. Every spell of rain through the gap wets the underlay and battens, and a quick tile job turns into timber repairs. Having it looked at early is the cheapest option you have.
