Guttering, Fascias and Soffits in Peterborough

Water spilling over the gutter in heavy rain, a damp stripe down the outside wall, paint flaking off the boards under the eaves, or a gutter that has started to sag. Tell us what you can see and we will pass it to a local roofing firm that repairs and replaces roofline work across Peterborough.

Guttering, Fascias & Soffits in Peterborough

What This Service Covers

  • Gutter repairs: resealing joints, replacing brackets, realigning sagging runs
  • Replacing leaking or broken sections, outlets and downpipes
  • Full replacement guttering in modern uPVC profiles
  • Replacing rotten timber fascia and soffit boards with uPVC
  • Capping or cladding sound timber boards
  • Soffit ventilation, so the roof space can breathe
  • Clearing blocked gutters as part of a repair or survey

Why the Roofline Matters

The fascia is the board along the bottom edge of the roof that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the board underneath it, closing the gap between the wall and the eaves. Together with the gutter, they take the water that runs off the whole roof and carry it away from the walls.

When any part of that fails, the damage shows up somewhere else. Water running down the brickwork soaks into the wall and appears inside as damp, often mistaken for a roof leak. Water left sitting against a timber fascia rots it from the back. A sagging gutter holds water and throws it over the edge instead of along to the outlet. Because of that, a lot of damp problems that people put down to the roof start at the roofline instead, and they are usually cheaper to put right.

Timber Fascias on Older Estate Houses

Many of the houses built across Peterborough's townships in the 1970s and 80s were finished with painted timber fascias and soffits. After decades of weather, a good number of those boards have softened behind the paint, particularly at joints and corners and where a gutter has leaked on them. The gutter brackets are only as secure as the timber they are screwed into, so a sagging gutter on an older estate house is often a fascia problem underneath.

There are two usual answers. If the timber is still sound, it can be capped with a uPVC board over the top. If it has started to rot, capping only hides the problem, and the boards should come off and be replaced with uPVC fascias and soffits fixed directly to the rafter feet. A good roofer will push a screwdriver into the timber before recommending either. If the roof is also near the end of its life, replacing the roofline at the same time as a re-roof saves paying for a second scaffold; our roof replacement page explains when that is worth doing.

Gutter Cleaning

Gutters on Peterborough's tree-lined roads and around its parks fill with leaves, and moss washed down from a roof blocks the outlets on every type of house. Clearing them properly is a basic part of looking after a roof. It is also where problems get spotted: a cracked joint, a loose bracket, a section with the wrong fall, or rot in the fascia behind. We pass on enquiries for gutter clearing as part of a repair or a wider roof check, so that whoever clears the gutter can also fix what they find.

Signs Your Guttering or Roofline Needs Attention

  • Water overflowing the gutter during rain rather than reaching the downpipe
  • Damp stripes or green staining on the wall beneath the gutter
  • Drips from joints between gutter sections
  • A gutter that visibly sags or pulls away from the wall
  • Paint flaking or timber splitting on the fascia boards
  • Gaps where birds or wasps are getting into the roof space
  • Plants growing in the gutter

What Changes the Price

How much of the roofline is involved. One joint, one run, one side of the house or the whole perimeter are very different jobs.

The height and access. A bungalow can often be done from ladders or a small tower. A two-storey house with a conservatory underneath needs more planning, and some jobs need scaffold.

Capping or replacing. Capping sound timber is quicker than stripping and replacing rotten boards, which may also reveal rafter ends that need repair.

Combining the work. Fascias, soffits and gutters done together cost less than three separate visits, and doing them alongside roof work saves again on access.

Typical 2026 UK prices for roofline work are set out in our roof repair costs guide.

How It Works

Describe what you have noticed and what kind of house it is. We pass your enquiry to a roofing firm that covers your area, and they arrange to look and quote. We are not the ones doing the work, and we do not inspect or approve the firm that is. It costs you nothing and commits you to nothing.

Related Services

Damp that is coming from the roof itself is covered on roof repairs. Moss that keeps blocking the gutters is usually a roof cleaning job, and gutters around a garage or extension roof are part of flat roofing.

Common Questions

Should I replace the gutters and the fascias at the same time?

If the fascias are rotten, yes, because the gutters have to come off to replace them anyway. If the fascias are sound, the gutters can be replaced on their own.

Is uPVC better than timber for fascias?

uPVC needs no painting and does not rot, which is why most replacements use it. On listed buildings or in some conservation areas, timber may be expected, so check with the council before changing the look of the house.

Why does my gutter overflow when it is not blocked?

It may have lost its fall towards the outlet, have too few outlets for the size of the roof, or be undersized for heavy rain. A roofer can check the alignment and suggest the fix.
