Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal in Peterborough
Thick cushions of moss along the tiles, clumps rolling down into the gutter, or a north-facing slope that has turned green. Tell us about the roof and we will pass it to a local roofing firm that removes moss and cleans roofs across Peterborough, carefully, by hand, and without blasting the tiles.

Why Moss Matters
A little moss does no harm on its own. The trouble comes when it builds up. Moss holds water against the tiles like a sponge, and in a hard winter that water can freeze and damage the surface of older concrete tiles. Thick moss lifts the edges of tiles, so rain is blown underneath. When it dries it breaks away in clumps that wash into the gutters and block the outlets, and the overflow then soaks the wall below. Moss grows most where a roof stays damp: north-facing slopes, roofs shaded by trees, and the older concrete tiles found on many of Peterborough's estates, whose surface has roughened with age and gives moss something to hold on to.
What a Proper Roof Clean Involves
Removal by hand. Moss is scraped and brushed off the tiles, working down the roof, on a dry day. It is slower than a pressure washer and much kinder to the roof.
A biocide treatment. Once the bulk is off, the roof is treated to kill the spores left behind, which slows regrowth. It works gradually over the following weeks and months.
Clearing the gutters. Everything that comes off the roof ends up in the gutters, so they are cleared and the downpipes checked afterwards.
A look at the roof while it is clean. With the moss gone, cracked or slipped tiles, loose ridge tiles and gaps in the mortar are easy to see. A good roofer will point these out, and a cleaning job often turns into a small repair.
What We Do Not Match
Tile manufacturers generally advise against cleaning tiled roofs with high-pressure water. It can strip the surface from concrete tiles, force water up under the laps into the roof space, and dislodge mortar from ridges and verges. For that reason, we do not pass on enquiries for pressure-washing or jet-washing tiled roofs. If a quote you receive includes it, ask why, and ask what the roofer will do to protect the tiles and the underlay.
We also do not arrange coating or painting roofs, cleaning conservatory roofs, or cleaning solar panels.
Roof Cleaning Cost: What Drives the Price
We do not publish a figure for roof cleaning, because the range between a small bungalow and a large detached house is too wide for a single number to help you. What moves the price is:
The size and pitch of the roof. More area takes longer, and a steep roof is slower and needs more safety equipment.
Access. A bungalow can often be done from ladders or a roof ladder. A two-storey house may need a tower or scaffold.
How much moss there is. A light covering is quick. A roof that has been left for many years takes much longer to clear by hand.
Whether a treatment is included. A biocide treatment is extra work and materials, but it is what stops the moss coming straight back.
Any repairs found. Replacing a few tiles or re-bedding a ridge while the roof is clear is usually cheaper than a separate visit later.
Moss Removal Cost Compared with Leaving It
The most useful way to think about moss removal is against what it prevents. Blocked gutters overflowing onto a wall, tiles lifted by moss letting water into the roof space, and frost damage to older tiles are all more expensive to put right than a clean. That said, if your roof is near the end of its life, a clean may not be the best use of money, and a roofer should tell you so. Our estate roofs section explains how to tell.
How Often Should a Roof Be Cleaned?
There is no fixed rule. Many roofs in open, sunny positions rarely need it. A shaded north-facing slope may need attention every few years. Keeping the gutters clear once or twice a year, and looking at the roof from the ground each spring, is usually enough to tell you when it is time.
How It Works
Tell us roughly how big the roof is, what it is covered with, and how much moss there is. We pass your enquiry to a roofing firm that covers your area, and they arrange to see it and quote. The cleaning is done by that firm rather than by us, and we do not inspect or approve it. It costs you nothing and commits you to nothing.
Related Services
If the clean reveals damage, roof repairs covers the fix. Blocked or damaged gutters are covered on guttering, fascias and soffits, and moss on a garage roof is often part of flat roofing.

Common Questions
Will a roof clean damage my tiles?
Not if it is done by hand with care. The risk comes mainly from high-pressure washing, which manufacturers generally advise against for tiled roofs.
How long does moss take to come back?
It depends on the roof's position and whether a treatment was applied. A treated roof in a sunny spot may stay clear for years; a shaded slope will see some regrowth sooner.
Can I remove the moss myself?
Clearing gutters from a secure ladder is reasonable for many people. Working on the roof itself is not, because tiles are slippery and fragile. Leave that to someone with the right equipment.
